Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

The first woman member of the United States Supreme Court was Sandra Day O'Connor.  She became an associate justice of the Supreme Court in 1981.  Sandra O'Connor was a lawyer and a judge before she became an associate justice.  She was selected for this important job by President Ronald Reagan and worked extremely hard to know the laws and how they have been used before.

No other jurist could have come to the Supreme Court under greater expectations and scorn. When President Ronald Reagan nominated Sandra Day O'Connor in 1981 to be the first woman justice to sit on the Supreme Court, he did so out of an obligation to keep a campaign promise. O'Connor's nomination was quick to draw criticism from both the political left and right.

"Yes, I will bring the understanding of a woman to the Court, but I doubt that alone will affect my decisions. I think the important thing about my appointment is not that I will decide cases as a woman, but that I am a woman who will get to decide cases."
